Another Heatwave

There will be another heatwave this weekend, this time it will be Severe, with temperatures peaking on Monday at a maximum of 40°c.

ACT Healths advice is:

  • Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, generally between 11 am and 3 pm.

  • Use a fan or an air-conditioning unit to cool down your home.

  • Rest and don't do strenuous physical activity in the heat.

  • If you don’t have air-conditioning, you may plan to go to a cool place such as a library, shopping centre, cinema or swimming pool. Make sure you maintain at least 1.5 metres away from people or groups you don’t know.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Eating smaller, cold meals, such as salads and fruit, can also help you to keep cool.

  • Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol – they can make dehydration worse.

  • Remind others to keep drinking water, including children.

  • Wear sunscreen (SPF30+) at least 20 minutes before you go outside, wear a hat and sunglasses.

  • Try to stay in the shade.

  • If you need to go out at the hottest time of the day, take your car or use public transport instead of walking.

  • Do not leave pets or young kids in the car by themselves.

  • Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool.

  • Pets can become dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors.

  • Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to exercise them in the heat of the day (mornings and evenings are best) and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot.

  • If the pavement is hot to the touch of your hand – it is too hot for your pet's paws also.

  • White or pink-skinned pets may need sunscreen applied.

  • Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse.
